    Comments about this product:

This book simply puts you in the mortar pit and the foxhole with Eugene Sledge during the battles of Peleliu and Okinawa. A chilling but factual account of the horrors of war with the insight of how Sledge dealt with the terror and fear that constantly faced him. What an amazing man and what an amazing American!

        Comments about this product:

I liked the book... thought it was well done. However I do not, as the producers of The Pacific have claimed, think it is "the best war novel ever written". What comes to mind are "The Naked and the Dead", Dispatches, and Stalingrad to name a few.

I've read many war novels, but "With the Old Breed" is by far the best account of war from a grunt's point of view. This book should be required reading for every high school senior. It is an excellent book from cover to cover.

I read Sledge some years ago. It is memorable. I recommended this book back then. I am pleased to do it again. It put me in the in the mind of the young marine in one of the last Pacific battles.

                    Comments about this product:

This book takes you into the center of the amphibious landings of the Pacific campaign late in WWII. Stunning, hard-bitten prose that takes away the glory of war and replaces it with a first hand account of what it means to be a Marine in a battle where more than half of your company becomes a casualty, and the remainder end up gaunt, filthy, battle weary survivors.
