Features

The album contains several versions of the opening theme song by Tom Waits, "Way Down In The Hole," as performed by The Blind Boys of Alabama, The Neville Brothers, and a recent version by a group of Baltimore teenagers DoMaJe. It features numerous tracks from the Baltimore club and hip-hop scene that have never before appeared on a major label release, including songs by Tyree Colion ("Projects"), Rod Lee ("Dance My Pain Away"), Diablo ("Jail Flick"), and DJ Technics ("My Life Extra"). This collection also includes the R&B and rock material used in the bar scenes, most notably The Pogues' "The Body of an American," plus "The Fall," the end-credit theme composed by music supervisor Blake Leyh. Each season finale concludes with a montage set to a carefully chosen song that atmospherically complements the action on screen. Jesse Winchester's "Step by Step" closed the first season; Paul Weller's "I Walk on Gilded Splinters" wrapped up the fourth. Interspersed snippets of dialogue, chosen by series creator David Simon and producer Karen L. Thorson, give this soundtrack its own mix-CD feel.
