Extended History:

Silver Kraken of Balon Greyjoy
.999 fine silver
~3.2 grammes
Denominated one "Stag"
Balon Greyjoy on obverse
Appx 21 mm in diameter
The Great Kraken on reverse
done in "country" styled
This small silver "stag" piece is from the Iron Islands in the mythical realm of Westeros shortly after the death of King Robert Baratheon, about three hundred years after Aegon I Targaryen united the warring kingdoms of Westeros under one ruler. This piece has been struck on a plancet of 1/10 troy ounce (3.1 grammes) of .999 pure silver, about 21mm in diameter. While it appears late in the story, it is designed in an older traditional "country" style with a stylized portrait of Balon Greyjoy, declaring himself Lord of the Iron Islands in defiance of the crown held by Joffrey. Balon wears a crown and holds an axe and a great pearl, signifying that he wields sea-power. The reverse shows the Kraken, sigil of House Greyjoy... the great sea monster capable of pulling ships to the bottom and feeding upon their crews.

Copper Penny of The Iron Islands
Pure Copper
~2.1 grammes
Denominated one "Penny"
Balon Greyjoy on obverse
Appx 20 mm in diameter
The Great Kraken on reverse
done in "country" style
This small copper penny piece is from the Iron Islands in the mythical realm of Westeros shortly after the death of King Robert Baratheon, about three hundred years after Aegon I Targaryen united the warring kingdoms of Westeros under one ruler. Westeros is the scene of events taking place in the series of novels by author George R.R. Martin now also an HBO miniseries winning critical acclaim. This piece has been struck on a handmade planchet of ~2 grammes of pure copper, about 20mm in diameter, using the same dies also used for the silver stag. This particular piece has been "circulated" such that is has some toning and wear on it, emulating coins that have passed through many hands. The first 100 of these coppers were preserved bright-uncirculated, and most of those went with George R.R. Martin to the San Diego ComicCon 2012. If you were fortunate enough to meet him there you might have gotten one!

Iron Islands Copper Star
.999 pure copper
~9.0 grammes
Denominated one "Star"
Balon Greyjoy on obverse
Appx 25 mm in diameter
The Reaver ship on reverse
This Copper "star" piece is from the Iron Islands in the mythical realm of Westeros, dating to shortly after the death of King Robert Baratheon, about three hundred years after Aegon I Targaryen united the warring kingdoms of Westeros under one ruler. This piece has been struck on an unrimmed planchet of 9 grammes of .999 pure copper, about 25 mm in diameter. The hardened steel dies for this piece were designed and engraved by Joe Paonessa in a somewhat modernistic style, including the unusual feature of incuse lettering. The obverse features a right-facing profile of a bearded Balon Greyjoy, declaring himself Lord of the Iron Islands in defiance of the crown held by Joffrey. Balon wears a laurel wreath and wears a gorget bearing the Kraken, sigil of House Greyjoy. The reverse bears the Reaver ship under full sail, emblematic of the sea power wielded by Balon. The motto of the Iron Islands WE DO NOT SOW, is proudly inscribed, indicating their disdain for farming folk. Above the ship is a seven pointed star with the numeral "1" in it, declaring the denomination of the coin "One Star" as well as the sevenfold aspect of deity in the dominant religion of the time.
