The Josephine Baker Story Blu-ray

SKU ID #356860
Outrageous, shocking, sensational- Josephine Baker (Lynn Whitfield) was born poor, but achieved fame and fortune through her sizzlingly exotic and erotic performances. Starting life on the American Vaudeville circuit, success Josephine to Paris where her semi-nude dancing causes an international sensation. Through her marriages to Italian pseudo-count (Ruben Blades) and orchestra leader (David Dukes), to her bond with army officer Sidney Williams (Louis Gosset, Jr.), Josephine's life is a roller coaster ride of love and rejection from both her lovers and her country. But semi-nude or head to toe in sequins; in battle fatigues or rags- her beauty and ambition ensured that Josephine Baker will always be remembered as the first, and possibly most loved, truly international star.

Comments about this product:

Lynn Whitfield truly embodies the essence of La Baker in a performance that was rightfully due to Diana Ross. While I loved the movie, I couldn't help but think of "Lady Sings the Blues", the Billie Holiday biopic that won accolades for Diana Ross. I have searched and searched for a soundtrack since the songs are infectious, to no avail. Lynn is greatly helped by strong support from both Rueben Blades and the late great, David Duke. I have seen this movie countless times and it reigns as one of my favorites. I was first introduced to the talent of Ms. Whitfield in a PBS performance of "For Colored Girls When the Rainbow is Enuf". I would have hoped that after an Emmy/Golden Globe win, we would have seen Ms. Whitfield in more roles. Such is the dilemma for a lot of black actresses. But at the end of the day, this is a wonderful homage to La Baker.
