I Can't Do This But, I Can Do That: A Film For Families About Learning Differences DVD

SKU ID #292430
$19.98
This 30-minute documentary takes an enlightening look at young people with a wide spectrum of learning differences, offering a compelling portrait of the ways in which these children are able to compensate by using their strengths to overcome their challenges. Many say they are no different from other kids, and can accomplish the same things – just differently. We hear from their parents as well as their teachers, all of whom are committed to helping the children discover the ways they learn best.

Kids’ interview segments are intercut with scenes of the children engaged in the activities that reflect their talents: one is a gifted muralist, another shines as a poet. Another boy is so articulate no one would ever suspect that he has dyslexia and has trouble spelling words and recognizing them on sight. A group of students attending Denver Academy, a school for students with learning differences, find that being surrounded by others with similar challenges helps them to accept themselves, as well as succeed academically and in the arts. The documentary ends on an uplifting note, reassuring children of different abilities that they are no less capable of performing great feats in their lives.

      Comments about this product:

I'm an assistant professor of education. I happened upon this film on a Sunday afternoon and my seven-year-old son asked if he could watch with me. He was entranced. He does not have a disability, but he said, "Yes, that is what if feels like when school is hard." I have recommended this film to all my students and colleagues. The documented children express their struggles in ways that connect the viewer to their pain and fear. All teachers should see this, and families should see it to understand why school is not a happy place for all students.

Wonderful film to explain characteristics of learning differences and, most importantly, how not manage them. The childrens' narration of their experiences and their feelings is most enlightening. Very thought provoking!

This DVD is a must have for all teachers, school psychologists, and administrators, both general & special ed. It's a perfect instructional tool for faculty meetings and teacher training programs in Universities. It can help parents contemplating placing their kids in private schools for kids with learning disabilities vs public school. As a teacher and specialist in the field of special education in Los Angeles for over 20 years, I can say with complete sincerity that showing this DVD has made a significant impact on everyone. All parents with family members who have learning disabilities and/or ADD may truly understand what their child faces - for the first time.

                  Comments about this product:

This story needs to be shared! Watching these children were like hearing my own story being told. As an adult I still struggle with Dyslexia and ADD. However, I am a published artist, award winning costumer, world traveled makeup artist, world traveled theatrical director. We just think different. For us knowing we aren't alone and for others to understand we have more to share in different ways, is why this documentary is so important.
