I'm not much into history -- but this mini-series caught my attention when I 1st saw it - and I only saw the ending -- had to have the whole series -- actors were great - story was great - educational value was great

This is a truly beautiful miniseries that makes the viewer feel as if they're watching history unfold before them. The casting and acting are superb - Paul Giamatti and Laura Linney deserve every accolade for sincere, gripping performances. And, the actors cast in the secondary roles (Tom Wilkinson, Stephen Dillane, David Morse, and on) were outstanding as well. This is a series for folks who like detail (visual and literal) and who appreciate the time it takes (sometimes a lot of time, as in part 2) to tell an intricate and passionate story about an event as important as the founding of our country. But, although some of the visual detail was exemplary (such as the progression of John Adams' aging teeth), in other places it lacked sorely (Abigail Adams didn't show any signs of aging for about 40 years, not until the very end of her life). Also, the one thing I found to be annoying (in an otherwise excellent production) was the director's or cinematographer's insistent use of skewed shots, either at an angle or by intentionally placing the actor in a remote corner of the shot whereby you almost don't see them, and are thereby distracted by the scenery. I appreciate unconventional cinematography, but this came across as unnecessary and seemed more about trying to impress the viewer. Despite that, this is still a glorious miniseries, an important story for everyone to see and learn from.

We purchased one as a Christmas gift and then ordered another for our own use. It was a moving story that, in my opinion, had been untold in film. We enjoyed it as entertainment but also learned a lot of American History. I hope HBO does more of these!

It is great as a reference to early American History and how our forefathers started....with their struggles. The movie makers did a superb job in the making of this film. Thank you Paul Giamtti and Laura Linney for making me feeling like I went back in time to personally meet John and Abigail Adams....wow! It blew me away.

I found this most informative and entertaining series. It jarred my memory of many things learned long ago, and informed me of things I never knew. I viewed the product at home, and talked about it, after viewing each disc, to all my friends until they were sick of hearing about it. However, several are interested enough to watch the series.

My one complaint is that of character identification. Of course, the main ones are recognizable, but those that appear sporadically are hard to define. For instance, was that Samuel Adams as a senator from Mass. in the first senate. It looked like him, but I was not exactly sure. I guess I would liked to have known each one's name and what state they were from.

Thank you for this most delightful, entertaining and informative series. All the work you put into it shows. I plan to buy the set, now that I have seen it. I will want to watch it over and share it with my family.

Great history lesson about an often overlooked founding father. If you have very yong children, may have to review first before viewing with your children and then fast forward through more graphic scenes or wait until they are older.

I WAS TOLD FROM A FRIEND THAT I WOULD LIKE JOHN ADAMS. I RENTED IT THROUGH NETFLIX & WATCHED ALL OF THEM THROUGH. I COULD NOT STOP. THIS WAS THEE MOST INCREDIBLE STORY. I AM NOW GOING TO BUY THE DVD.

My favorite movie used to be Gone With the Wind. Not anymore - this is a fabulous movie - allowing us to feel a piece of our history and what our forefathers went through and gave up and believed in to make this nation what it is today. It is really impressive on every level. The actors are so real - costumes, make-up (or lack thereof), accents, everything. Thanks, Tom Hanks, and all of you for your gift. It makes history come alive.

Maybe even better than Band of Brothers!-certainly different! Highest praise to all concerned. If Mr Hanks continues to back productions like this his money will be well spent! Have watched the series twice-will watch again. All wonderful but Laura Linney particularly brilliant! Why not include mini-series in the Oscars?

Certainly one of the most gripping and authentic mini series of all time! The human condition and challenges endured and overcome by the early American ancestors shines through in this story. The collective triumphs and failures all told from the perspective of this rather unknown man make it all the more compelling. I cried at the end and I am not even American! A true "must see!"

Being British I saw this on the english more4 channel. Fantastic although not totally accurate but we must allow for artistic license. I also loved the score, particularly the opening theme - very stirring.
