HBO premieres the first of 43 episodes of In Treatment, a new half-hour drama series starring Gabriel Byrne, and adapted from an enormously popular Israeli series created by Hagai Levi (one of HBOs executive producers, along with Rodrigo Garcia, Steve Levinson and Mark Wahlberg). Set within the intimate confines of individual psychotherapy sessions with five sets of patients, the series centers around Paul (Byrne), a therapist who exhibits an insightful, confident demeanor when treating his patients, but displays a crippling insecurity while counseled by his own therapist, Gina (Dianne Wiest). Patients undergoing treatment with Paul include a young doctor (Melissa George) who has fallen in love with Paul, a Navy pilot (Blair Underwood) reevaluating his life after a failed mission in Iraq, a teenage gymnast (Mia Wasikowska) with suicidal tendencies, and a sexually passionate couple (Josh Charles and Embeth Davidtz) who are troubled in all other areas of their lives. In addition, Pauls wife Kate (Michelle Forbes) will be featured prominently this season.

    Comments about this product:

I cannot say one thing derogatory about the In Treatment series. The acting is superb and for the most part each subject builds in excitement as the season progresses to conclusion.I started to watch the third season because Debra Winger was in it and I think she is wonderful both in looks and as an actress.Got hooked then had to order seasons one and two to catch up.Gabriel Byrne,in my opinion,is beyond description in this series and believe it or not I had never heard of him until I started to watch this show.

      Comments about this product:

Great passion is palpable between Paul and his patients. One feels the intensity of discovery and new understandings/paradigms. Beautifully written and beautifully portrayed, there are glimpses of desperation and neediness, resolve and joy. Any open-minded individual will be charmed, fascinated, even chilled by the honesty portrayed.

            Comments about this product:

This may well be my favorite show of all time. It provides such an insightful view of both the patient and therapist, allows viewer to participate unseen in the therapy session. If I were directing a residency program for psychiatry or psychology residents, I would use these first two seasons as key elements of the curriculum. You should try marketing it to these programs.

I'm ordering the 1st season now and if the 2nd season is in, i'll be ordering it too. I was overwhelmed by the superb acting and the complete set-up of it all. Yes! This is different from so many other series I've watched. Each of the actors need recognition for their fine acting and the producer(s) need recognition for their creativity and putting it all together. who'd thought it!

I love this show from day one. I got hook from the start. I couldn't wait until it came on dvd to go and purchase it. I love the intensity of the show. All the characters really portray a wide spectrum of different issues and qualms that we face as humans.

Great show! Thanks to the creators and all involved.

                  Comments about this product:

IN TREATMENT is obstensively about psychotherapy. A more global view would state that it is about the human condition.

Paul (Gabriel Bryne) and his supervisor (played by Diane Weist) are not portrayed as any more or less troubled by the travails of life and the imperfections which emanate from their childhood and the present -- than the patients they treat.

Acting is superb by all. Direction, editing are artfully and minimally acomplished -- even the opening and closing and unobstusive music add to this exceptional series.

The program demonstrates the constraints of 'therapy'... Its many limitations and that there are no guarantees when one attempts 'therapy;' just as in life.

The programs range from about 23 minutes to almost half an hour. Once you see one, I suspect, you will be compelled to watch them all.

                  Absolutely brilliant!

                            Comments about this product:

The show lures the viewer in. It may seem slow, at first, but the viewer must give it a chance. As it unravels, it becomes engaging as we begin to pick the minds of each character (very much like the therapist, Dr. Paul Weston, does masterfully). Once the characters become intricately exposed to us, it's hard to turn away because we want to see what happens next.

Gabriel Byrne is an excellent actor who has never, in my opinion, been given his just rewards. He did receive a Golden Globe for this portrayal and it's long overdue. He's brilliant as the therapist who says so much with his facial and hand gestures...the mark of an excellent actor who can convey so much without mundane dialogue.

It's really great to see a show that isn't the same as everything else you've seen. In Treatment is that show. It's a great show if you're interested in people. More than just relating here and there it gives an interesting glimpse, albeit at times a bit melodramatic, of human nature. Each character is well developed and interesting. Each story is unique as well as archetypal. It is well worth watching.

Though each episode is only half an hour long, so much happens, there is so much insight to be found within and between the lines of dialogue--and they generate so much subsequent thought to unpack it all--that often it is as if these mini-dramas were many times longer. Just as the first reviewer said I await the second season with great anticipation and trepidation.

                                Dialogue you can't put down.

The power of this series is its' subtleties. The power of Gabriel Byrne's performance lies in the quietess and patient pacing. It's Chess in the flesh as doctor and patient circle one another, each searching for a way into the other. The writing is magnificent. If there is one caveat that distresses me most, it's that Season 2 may never approach the excellence of season 1.
