This epic 2004 HBO six-part miniseries directed by Mike Nichols and written by Tony Kushner is set in mid-1980s New York City. Following the lives and spiritual experiences of people affected by AIDS during the Reagan Administration, the drama features Al Pacino as power-monger Roy Cohn and Justin Kirk as Prior Walter, both dying of the deadly disease. Ben Shenkman plays Walter's ex-lover Louis Ironson and Emma Thompson stars as Angel, who insists Walter is a prophet. Along with Meryl Streep as the ghostly Ethel Rosenberg, a woman Cohn sent to the electric chair, the ambitious film also features Patrick Wilson as Mormon gay lawyer Joe Pitt and Mary-Louise Parker as Joe's estranged, pill-popping wife. Mounted on an extravagant $60 million budget, this profound, small-screen adaptation of Tony Kushner's Pulitzer Prize-winning play has been hailed as a modern classic.

    Comments about this product:

The refusal to deal with reality by LDS members was well-depicted. (Should disclose, I was raised LDS but left the church as a teenager.) Loved Emma Thompson's portrayal of the angel. Showed a little more about what it is/was like having HIV than I really wanted to see, but the value of the movie made it worth it, and maybe it wouldn't have been as impressive without the grit. I liked the end very much which shows that "Mother Pitt" and the three original gay men had become/were much more than their stereotypes. Wondered what happened to Joe Pitt -- would have liked to see a resolution of his profound confusion or at least seen that he was still a mess -- showing nothing about him at the end was curious.

Just a fantastic film - rivals any theatrical production of the last decade. Funny, weird, and moving. And has Meryl Streep playing a Rabbi!

          Comments about this product:

Fantastic play turned into a wonderful film. Every actor is right for their role (or roles, in this matter). Pacino and Streep work magic, and Mike Nichols directing is really something unmissable.

Description of dvd was totally incomplete. When I received the DVD it was not at all what I thought it was going to be. The information listed online should explain better that it is a serious drama. Also kind of drug on.
